67 high street - a brief history

Built in 1700, our office (No.67) formed one house
with the adjacent shop (No.65). In the nineteenth century the building was divided and the
adjoining carriageway was built over to
enlarge no. 67.

Until 1890, we have no record of what the
building was used for, however there is rumour
that it was once a brothel…where this came from
we don’t know!

A watchmaker, James Steptoe, used our building
from 1890 until the 1930’s. However, the shop is
best remembered as Stephenson & Co., the
jewellers who sold the premises to the solicitors,
Wainwright and Stevens. They had a practice
here from 1984 to 1993. It then continued to be
a solicitors until we moved here in 2006.

We have given the building a touch of the
Mousetrap magic, including a welcoming
reception room and a studio where the creative
sparks fly. We’d love you to pop in and see us,
the kettle’s always hot!
